Estrella de Fornells free crochet star pattern

My first pattern of the New Year is finished!  Estrella de Fornells free crochet star pattern to get 2017 off to a nice start!

I designed this pattern when on holiday in November. We stayed in a cute little house near Fornells, Menorca to get a dash of winter sun.  The house and gardens were gorgeous, and just to make my holiday the BEST, two little kittens came to visit us each day.

I sat in the deck chair one morning with the kittens sunbathing and rummaging through the massive bag of yarn I managed to squeeze into my suitcase, and started making these little stars…

What a lovely time I had making them and in such a beautiful place.  All the photos are taken at the house we stayed in and, as cats are always extremely helpful when you are taking photos, I had help in the form of photobombing from Seville the orange kitty.

Terminology
The pattern is written with American terminology first followed by UK terminology, like this— 1 sc/dc. So if you use American terms just read the bit before the / and if you use UK terms read the bit after the /.  I hope that makes sense!

Round 4:
Join colour D, ch 1, [2 sc/dc in 1 st, 1 sc/dc in 2 sts] 5 times in total, join to first st made. End colour D. (20 sts)

Join colour E, ch 1 and 1 sc/dc in same place, [(1 hdc/htr, 1 dc/tr) in 1 sts, (1 tr/dtr, ch 4, turn to work into chain stitches just made, 1 sc/dc in 2nd, 3rd and 4th chain from hook, 1 tr/dtr) in 1 st, (1 dc/tr, 1 hdc/htr) in 1 st, 1 sc/dc in 1 st] 5 times in total omitting last sc/dc on final repeat. Join to first st made and end colour E. (50 sts)

Round 6:
Join colour F in 1st chain made on any star arm of last round, ch 1, [3 sc/dc in ch-1 of star arm, 1 sc/dc in 5 sts, sc3tog/dc3tog in next 3 sts, 1 sc/dc in 5 sts] 5 times in total. Join to first st made and end colour F. (70 sts)

Round 7:
Join colour G in 2nd of any 3 sc/dc, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc/tr), 2 dc/tr in same place, [1 sc/dc in 5 sts, sc3tog/dc3tog in next 3 sts, 1 sc/dc in 5 sts, 5 dc/tr in next st] 5 times in total omitting 5 dc/tr on final repeat, 2 dc/tr in beginning st and join to 3rd of beginning ch 3. End colour G. (80 sts)

Now sew in all those pesky ends!

To make a garland just make a long chain of stitches and attach the stars by working a slip stitch through the middle stitch of the star arm.

I hope you enjoy making Estrella de Fornells! free crochet star pattern.

Happy Hooking!
